Don't have a CAD file of what you want to animate? No problem. CraneDigital modeled this fractional Distillation column using only a few photographs as reference.
Before the translation process: Model exists in its raw state. Sometimes surfaces are broken out, sometimes they are not. No color, texture or non-polygonal detail exists on the model at this point. Model is shown here as a simple OpenGL preview. All surfaces default to gray, or random color assigned during the engineering process.
After the file translation process: Surface detail is created: paint, color, decals, reflection, refraction, specular high-lights, all the things that make a model look like what it's supposed to. And all done starting with the original CAD engineering files. Please click above image to enlarge.
3D File translation has turned into a specialty of CraneDigital. We can take just about anything you have, and turn it into just about anything you need. We work with some of the most powerful translators in the industry and are adept at trouble shooting tricky files.
In the above image AutoCAD 3D models were used as a starting point. Once your CAD models are translated and moved into our animation environment, additional models and objects can be built. Surfacing, texturing, rendering and animation are now all possible.

Now, with the powerful addition of Softimage XSI's CrossWalk 2.0 standard, even more possibilities open up-especially between industry giants such as Maya and 3DSMax.
EXAMPLES:
1. Taking your engineering CAD files (ProE, Catia, AutoCAD, Unigraphics, Ideas, etc.) and turning them into surface models for use in commercially available animation software packages (Softimage XSI, 3DSMax, Maya, LightWave, etc.).
2. Converting files from animation packages to other animation packages and retaining as much of the original data as possible. For example, a model created in one modeling package may have textures applied. We'll make sure the texture maps and surface normals of the model survive the translation intact, and clean up what needs to be cleaned.
WHY?
1. If you've developed your product in CAD, most of the modeling work has already been done. We can take your CAD models and turn them into marketing masterpieces for web, print, DVD, animation and product shots. This increases your Return on Investment (ROI).
2. Once your model is translated, surfaced and textured, if there's a cosmetic or structural change - either at the last minute, or a year later your product can be re-rendered with the new information.
3. You have complete control of your object in 360° space; composition, lighting, camera angles and compositing with background imagery.
5. Creating "cut-away" style illustrations is a popular option, using transparent and semi-transparent layers to show as much intricate detail of your product as you choose, or eliminating sensitive details.
