3D rendering is the process of taking your 3D scene (composed of models, textures, lights, etc.) and taking a "virtual snapshot," turning it into a still image. You may then take this image and manipulate it like any other JPEG, TIF, TGA, BMP, etc. in an application like Photoshop and use it for print, web, DVD or multi-media applications.
Without the rendering process, your 3D scene is unviewable by others. Rendering is a necessary step in the process, and the part which provides the perfect image you are after.
Rendering can be one of the most time-intensive parts of the project, however hardware and software tools are getting faster which helps the rendering process. For low-resolution applications such as web-based deliverables, rendering is typically quite fast. The higher the resolution of the final image, the longer the rendering time.
There are numerous rendering tools available. CraneDigital uses a variety of rendering "engines" based on project requirements. Scenes and objects can be created in a given 3D application, then rendered in another using file translation tools. This can be a difficult and time-consuming task, or simple and fast, depending upon the specifics of the file being translated such as motion options, textures, etc. Procedural textures are often understood only in the application they're created in, and won't survive a translation to another rendering tool. You need to begin and render in the same application.
What you are after is that image that's worth a thousand words so rendering is where the rubber meets the road. It's what your target audience sees, and often times drives the entire project. What application you will be rendering in determines the production pipeline: for example, if you are looking for realistic hair and fur, you want to build your models and scenes in an application that has a rendering engine that understands your hair and fur "tools." If you require photo-realistic rendering there are a variety of tools and steps necessary to accomplish this. Assuming your model is accurate, photo-real depends on the big 3: texture, light and the rendering engine.
